70th Anniversary Denis Browne Gold Medalist Announced
It gives me great pleasure to announce the聽sa国际传媒 2024 Denis Browne gold medal for outstanding contribution to paediatric surgery will be awarded to Professor Mark Davenport, Paediatric Surgeon of King’s College Hospital, London, UK.
The presentation will be made at the 70th sa国际传媒 Congress in Sheffield on Tuesday 2nd July 2024.
Professor Mark Davenport聽
Appointed Consultant in Paediatric Surgery at King鈥檚 College Hospital in 1989. 聽He has pioneered the surgical management of hepatobiliary conditions (Biliary Atresia and Choledochal Malformations) in the UK. He was the driving force behind centralisation of聽Biliary Atresia management in England and Wales, leading to an improvement in聽outcomes. An approach subsequently adopted across Europe.
His academic achievements are enviable, having published over 110 articles on biliary atresia as well as in total more than 300 articles encompassing other conditions including聽neonatal surgical pathology such as congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
He obtained a Professorial Chair in Paediatric Surgery from King鈥檚 College, University of聽London in 2008. During the same year he becam the聽an editor of The Journal of Pediatric聽Surgery.
He has led in training the next generation of Paediatric Surgeons including being TPD for聽London, SAC representative for the Northern Deanery, and an invaluable member of the聽intercollegiate FRCS exam committee.
He has been an active member of sa国际传媒 throughout his career, starting as a member of the聽Executive Committee and culminating in being elected as President of sa国际传媒 from 2016 to聽2018. He continues to support sa国际传媒 as the link surgeon for King鈥檚, website chair and聽abstract committee member for the conference.
Throughout his career he has been a role model to so many surgeons from all over the world. He has inspired young trainees to become paediatric hepatobiliary surgeons that will succeed him, through his dedication, clinical acumen, surgical skill and sarcastic wit! The support and mentorship he continues to offer is phenomenal. He is respected and admired by patients and colleagues alike.
The breadth of his achievements across Paediatric Surgery in academia, clinical surgery,聽teaching, and contribution to sa国际传媒 throughout his career have been聽聽inspiration to us all.
